In a move to bring community-based tourism up to international standards, the Designated Areas for Sustainable Tourism Administration (Dasta) has chosen Chiang Mai’s Nai Wiang area and Loei’s Chiang Khan district to serve as role models in the first year.

Chuwit Mitrchob, acting director for Dasta, said they aim to nominate Nai Wiang and Chiang Khan as sustainable destinations in 2022, so the Top 100 index becomes more concrete.

They will then move on to Na Kluea area in Chonburi, Muang Kao in Sukhothai, Koh Mak in Trat and Suphanburi’s U-Thong district.

“Sustainable tourism has been introduced for a while now, but no clear or concrete criterion set so far,” Chuwit said. “However, the Sustainable Destinations Top 100 index will help answer questions, because it has clear requirements in both quality and quantity.”

The index will be acknowledged by Internationale Tourismus-Börse Berlin (ITB), and Thai tourism brands will be more accepted at the international level, benefiting and preserving the traditional lives of locals.

The project also corresponds to the government’s national strategy on eco-tourism and will focus on key criteria, making tourism in Thailand more responsible and sustainable.

If you just look around, in your own area, where you live, how much sustainability do you see? The idea is great, but if the people don't support,  or don't even understand the concept of sustainability, it will unfortunately be an impossible mission.

Tourism and sustainability are opposites !!!

First you destroy the environment to build hotel, restaurants and the things that come with it,

then you put a solar panel on the roof and call it sustainable ... quite funny if you think about how stupid this is !

More concrete is worrying, I've seen what that's done to Pattaya,
