South Korea urged to import more Thai products

BANGKOK(NNT)-Deputy Prime Minister and Commerce Minister, Jurin Laksanawisit, has met with South Korea’s Trade, Industry and Energy Minister, Yoo Myung-hee, to enhance bilateral economic ties, while urging the East Asian nation to increase its import of goods including sugar, rubber, mangos and mangosteen at the same time as providing online sales space for Thai goods on popular South Korean platforms.

Mr. Jurin reported that he engaged in a teleconference with his South Korean counterpart, discussing global economic and trading circumstances and the effects of COVID-19. He said they agreed to tighten ties between their nations and that he used the opportunity to ask the minister to aid in promoting Thai products from sugar to processed chicken and shrimp. He also asked that Thai products be placed on popular platforms including Coupang, Naver and WeMakePrice.

The two ministers agreed to push for a Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) to be concluded this year as targeted, so that it may come into effect in the near future and embolden businesses in Asia as well as lift them out of the COVID-19 environment.

A luxury tax.

So let me get this straight.  Jurin calls up the Korean Trade and Energy minister and asks him to do the all work for the government and Thai exporters.  Then offers him nothing in return.  You can't be serious.  Even in the parallel universe of Thailand this can't really have happened like this.

And not one word that Thailand is going to import more South Korean goods in reciprocation. Typical.

No worries, once the COVID has been dealt with Thailand can go back to exporting young ladies with special services.

and does it work, force other countries, or they know you have to grease the wheels ?

and what will thailand import in exchange ?

When Europe and US asked Thailand to buy more products and get rid of the luxury tax, they didnt care to listen

Korea imports plenty of Thai "little ghosts" already...

Exactly, Xonax. With Thailand it always is a one-way street.

Just imagine the EU slapped a 60 - 80% import tax tariff PLUS a 120% (or even higher) "luxury goods" tax on Thai fruit, prawns or other produce like they do with many European products such as wine, spirits, cheese, etc. etc.

And then hear the Thais whine and wail how unfair it all is.

There is a good reason why Thailand consistently clocks up a very healthy trade surplus. And there also is a reason why simple run-of-the-mill table wine that retails in Europe at 4.99 euros a bottle sets you back a not so shabby 30 euros in Thailand -- and it's NOT due to the shipping cost.

How about making products people want to buy instead of all the urges.

The export and domestic economy of Thailand was ruined by the junta prior to COVID. A major devaluation of the ฿ will be required for that to change. With the curren, let them eat cake, lot in charge don't expect that to happen  anytime soon.

Free mama cup.......must buy a case to be eligible.........applies to free massage promo as well...for "free" 30

Weaken the Baht, then maybe Thailand exports might increase, Thailands goods/services are far to expensive.

Got to look at the bigger picture.

If you had good wine at EU/UK prices agriculture production would fall because all the rice farmers would start to have wine tasting evenings/weekends and neglect the rice harvests etc.
