Sokha case may be delayed for up to four years

Featured Replies

Amid the delay of former opposition party leader Kem Sokha’s treason trial due to the COVID-19 pandemic, Prime Minister Hun Sen has said the case could be delayed until 2024. Sokha is charged with “conspiracy with foreign powers” and the trial at the Phnom Penh Municipal Court began in early January. However, the outbreak of the coronavirus has caused it to be suspended.

Mr Hun Sen in May has previously said the case could be delayed until next year and not held by August, which was when the European Union was to have made its final decision on partial removal of the Kingdom’s Everything-but-Arms trade status. However, speaking during a closed-door Council of Ministers meeting at the Peace Palace on Friday, Mr Hun Sen said the case may be delayed for the next four years until after commune and national elections in 2022 and 2023 are held.

In an official document cited by Khmer Times, he noted that Sokha is quite afraid of being jailed and it is possible that the court will sentence him to jail because the EU cut 20 percent of the EBA trade deal, citing the case as one of the reasons. The European Union on August 12 announced its official decision to partially withdraw Cambodia’s duty-free quota-free access to the 27-nation bloc.
