"Nothing to see here" - press excluded, migrants told to go home after 400 descend on police station in visa dispute

Four hundred migrant workers - mostly Cambodians working at the same company in the Lak Chai Muang Yang industrial estate in Muang, Rayong - descended on the Samnak Thong police station to seek justice.

They claim they have paid 15,000 baht each to a visa agent but have been waiting for nearly a year for a visa.

In addition they allege that they have to pay 250 baht a month out of their salary for police "tea money" as they don't have the paperwork.

The furious workers met a deputy at the station Pol Lt-Col Manoon Charoensri who made a point of excluding the press saying that "there is nothing to see here".

A representative of the visa agents was summoned but the name of their company and the company where the workers are employed was not revealed.

All the visa agent would do was mumble about Covid-19 and border closures making the issuance of visas impossible.

Chuan, representing the workers, said most of them had been in Thailand for years and had paid 15,000 baht (or 18,000 baht in some cases) to extend their visas nearly a year ago.

But they still had not got the stamp.

Every time pay day comes around, he said that each employee has 250 baht docked from their salary "as a payment to police" because their visa had not yet been renewed.

The police told the protesters to go home after doing nothing for them, said the media who noted that the Cambodians dispersed in an unhappy mood.

Thaivisa notes that the expression "nothing to see here" is often used when, to the contrary, there is everything to see.

More victims of the various shonks of the visa mills and "visa agents" that are practically all over the country and in many cases operate with the singalongs and protections of higher echelon, if only Tahitian would have simplified their visas system life would be a lot easier here...

You are eithet ignorant of the Parallel Agent system or deliberately confusing the two.

400 x 15,000 baht - that's 6 million baht that some shyster(s) have defrauded out of these poor migrants. Add to that the 250 baht per month payment to the police. Little wonder the police didn't want to deal with it if they are raking in 100,000 baht a month. RTP - Rotten to the core.

Why police want deal whit it if get 100 k every month! Maybe that what you mean lol.Thats quite many traffic stop's 500 bth!

250 baht a month ducted from their pay for police bribe. This needs to be investigated and those responsible jailed.

Agree.....this should be headline news in every Newspaper in the country.

It needs to be enforced that the laws get enforced. For some people laws are just an opportunity to make money. Many know this but often not much happens. And if people complain then there is nothing to see. An endless story that is repeated again and again...

nahhh, there is no corruption here, Prayut has nothing to investigate, just look at the Boss "Red Bull kid" case, it says it all

There is a solution...pay agents another 30,000 baht and police 500baht per week tea money.

Money talks... every thing is negotiable...there is no corruption involved here...just business as usual...

Inactive duties apart from collecting tea money.

Watch this space, next will be all those foreigners who have bought “visas” from agents in Pattaya. Can you imagine the protests outside the immigration office in 2 weeks from now, foreigners on overstay demanding why they still don’t have their visas yet ?

This is going to be fun. Hahaha !!
