Thai conscript dies after just two weeks in military service

 

 

“An end to conscription” hashtag has become a hot trend on Twitter today, with more than 56,000 tweets, after a Facebook post about the death of a young man only ten days after he entered military service.

 

The Facebook post reads “Our family has received the word “sorry” for the lifeless body of a younger brother, plus 20,000 baht for initial funeral costs. Is that the price of a family’s loss? The family is suspicious of the true cause of the death. Our brother walked into a camp, but came out in a coffin.”

 

According to the post, the victim, identified as 21-year old Seri Bootwong, was enlisted into military service and reported to a military camp on September 1st. On September 14th, an army general notified the family that the new conscript died at about 1.45am of a blood clot, preventing blood flow to the brain.

Sorry to hear that RIP young man I only hope there was no foul play connected to his death can be brutal in the army on basic training

How do you detect irregular heartbeats on a dead person? Any pathologists on TV?

Thai netizens on Tuesday demanded an end to military conscription after a Facebook post announced the death of another young conscript in mysterious circumstances.

 

Seree Butwong, 21, was found dead at his base on Monday, just 10 days after entering military service, said the post, which was apparently written by the victim’s family.

 

It went on to say: “Our family has received the word “sorry” for the lifeless body of a younger brother, plus Bt20,000 for initial funeral costs. Is that the price of a family’s loss? The family is suspicious of the true cause of the death. Our brother walked into a camp, but came out in a coffin.”

 

On Monday, an Army general notified the family that the victim died of a blood clot, preventing blood flow to the brain, at about at 1.45am on Monday morning.

 

On Tuesday, the hashtag “end conscription” began trending on Twitter along with pictures of Seree.

 

Thai PBS reports that the Army has returned Seree’s body to his hometown in the Northeast province of Surin.

 

Army spokesman Maj-General Thirapong Patthamasing na Ayudhya told media on Tuesday that doctors at Bhumibol Hospital had diagnosed the conscript’s cause of death as an irregular heartbeat and not due to any physical attack. He added that the victim’s father, Somsong, had accepted the doctors’ findings.

 

The Army has offered to pay funeral costs and Bt200,000 in compensation to Seree’s family.

 

Several conscripts have died in mysterious circumstances at military bases in recent years.

Not the first, and definitely will not be the last. When is this Country going to wake up and end these archaic practices. IF he had an irregular heartbeat that should have been picked up at the medical surely. However, the medical is probably just breath in, breath out, and cough.

R.I.P. Young Man and condolences to the Family.

It is a great humiliation to have anyone die under your command during peacetime.  Hope the family can afford an independent autopsy.

Maybe the whole thing was just so irregular it was the first thing that came to mind.

Basic training should be hard, physically and mentally demanding and exhausting. Its aim should be to produce a soldier who can face the physical and mental stress and demands of the battlefield.

 

It doesn't need to be brutal.

 

The instructors can be brutal.

There are some inconsistencies;

1. First Story states;  an army general notified the family that the new conscript died at about 1.45am of a blood clot, preventing blood flow to the brain

2. Second story states: doctors at Bhumibol Hospital had diagnosed the conscript’s cause of death as being an irregular heartbeat and not due to any physical attack

 

Story 1 indicates a  fatal ischemic stroke. It is most unusual for a 21 year old in  good health to die in this manner. 

Usually it occurs as a result of;

-  Physical injury, e.g. head trauma

- Drug abuse

- Genetic predisposition and other unknown causes

- infections

- Inflammatory disease

 

If the  deceased was not physically injured and there are no indications other family members experiencing sudden death in this manner, then one would wonder about Covid19.   We know that the infection is an inflammatory illness and can give rise to blood clots in the infected,

That is not true. A person can have a irregular heart beat and the Dr. can miss it using a stethiscope. A friend was found to have a problem after years of physicals and also cardiograms. He went in for a bowel issue while recieving a finger wave the Dr. says cannot do a thing for you until you get your heart problem repaired. The Dr. detected the irregular heart beat thru the bowel pulse.

Im well aware of that I was born in the army and my old man was a RSM only one word to describe him but I cant print it here

Conscription is military slavery, needs to be a mass refusal to serve their feudal overlords

I was under the impression that this is regular.  These kinds of deaths  are all too often. More dead conscripts from 'irregular heartbeat' than defending the borders of Thailand, seems to me. I don't doubt he died from a blood clot obtained from a clout to the head.

Well there's the problem!  No battles are in Thailand future as long as they have a white flag on hand. The military truly are a huge  unnecessary expense for the taxpayers to bare.
