Australia's successful World Cup Final marked the retirement of arguably the world's greatest fast bowler. On statistics alone McGrath would have to be considered the best fast bowler of all time.

His statistics: 563 test wickets (most by a fast bowler) at an average of 21.64

381 ODI wickets at 22.02

71 total World Cup wickets (record) at 18.19

26 wickets in 2007 WC (record) at 13.73

McGrath retires at the peak of his game and leaves a huge hole in the team for Australia to fill.

There were a lot of "quicks" who were unplayable on their day; Marshall, Hall, Snow, Thompson, Lillee, even the despised Larwood....all I'm doing is insulting the ones I leave out. McGrath was great EVERYDAY.

If you are to simply go on test averages, there are many in front of McGrath. You've picked Marshall as your favorite, but equally a case could be made for Joel Garner or Curtly Ambrose from that great WI era. Even Stuart Clark, in the current Australian test team, has an average of 17.8.

I think, for his longivity and his ability to also produce records in the one day arena, make McGrath arguably the best fast bowler.

It must be remembered he had the world's greatest wicket taker, Shane Warne, in his team most of the time. He specialised in picking up tail enders thereby leaving little for others. McGrath always targeted the best player in the opposition teams, and his figures against players like Lara and Atherton are proof of his abilities at the top level.

Complete <deleted>.I think old croc summed it up well. :o

As Bloncs has said, the best in the modern bowler.

Still,at the peak of his form before he injured his back, there was no better than D.K. Lillie.Watching him live, coming in from his long run was just a sight to behold.

Agree with you about Lillee. I loved watching him running in at the WACA. I remember one memorable day when he was bowling to Viv Richards in a one dayer. First 3 balls aimed at the head had Viv ducking and the 4th clean bowled him! Great stuff. :o

OK mate,it was a little bit smashed up,but all should be back to normall in about 6 weeks.I now set off airport security gates ,well the ones in Aussie. Here I just stroll through.

Yes Bloncs,Hadlee could bowl a bit.The funny thing was that if you asked him who was the bowler that he most admired, he would tell you that it was DKL.
