BANGKOK(NNT)-In the interest of tourist safety once the COVID-19 situation moderates, the Ministry of Commerce is cracking down on counterfeit pharmaceuticals in tourist destinations, while also stepping up efforts against intellectual property (IP) infringements, after already destroying some 700,000 fake goods valued at more than 350 million baht, as a sign of intent to trade partners.

The Deputy Minister of Commerce, Weerasak Wangsupakitkosol, said today the government attaches importance to dealing with IP violations and is working with offices including the Department of Intellectual Property, the Internal Security Operations Command (ISOC), the Royal Thai Police, the Ministry of Defense, the Ministry of the Interior, the Ministry of Digital Economy and Society (MDES), the Department of Special Investigations (DSI), the Government Public Relations Department (PRD), the Anti-Money Laundering Office (AMLO) and the National Broadcast and Telecommunications Commission (NBTC) as well as private entities to seriously contend with violators, subjecting them to the full extent of the law and destroying their products to prevent their return to market.

The Ministry of Commerce earlier this month held a ceremony for the destruction of counterfeit goods with the intention of strengthening confidence among Thailand’s trading partners. This was the first year representatives of 90 countries as well as domestic agencies were invited to witness the destruction. Most observed the action via the teleconference software Zoom, watching the event broadcast from Chonburi and Saraburi provinces.

A total of 785,376 articles, comprising clothing, bags, belts, shoes, watches, mobile phones, CDs/DVDs, glasses, cosmetics, hats and blankets, worth a total 354 million baht, were destroyed. The Royal Thai Police were responsible for the confiscation of 293,310 of the items, the Customs Department 285,842 items and the DSI 206,224 items.

What about the tables of ED drugs and the like always being sold in the open around Sukhumvit 11 and a couple of blocks in either direction? I would never buy any, but I've always wondered 1) are they fake, packaging and all? 2) even if they are real, does sitting out in the heat and sun do anything? 3) why is it allowed to go on at all, don't drug stores have to be licensed?

And finally, are the efforts described in the article serious and wide spread, or just token and window dressing?

I hope that includes all the fake designer bags and luggage which you see being carried onto the economy class sections of aircraft by bogans squeezed into overstretched lycra and other types .

They've been performing this farce regularly for more than thirty years, even on occasion using a steamroller to crush the counterfeit goods, for extra special effect. Has it made the slightest jot of difference? I leave it to renowned TV commentators to pronounce their verdict.
