Following an order from Preah Sihanouk provincial governor Kuoch Chamroeun to take urgent action to control the security situation in Sihanoukville, joint forces yesterday raided an entertainment centre and arrested nearly 400 suspects for drug-related activities. According to a police report, the crackdown was carried out at 12.45am at the Cin Khay Men Restaurant & KTV in Sihanoukville’s Buon commune.

Provincial hall spokesman Kheang Phearom said yesterday the raid was part of the response against rising crimes and was led by Chamroeun, who is also the head of the Provincial Administrative Unity Command (PAUC). “The operation was carried out based on the order which had been  issued by the provincial governor,” he said.

“The joint forces are working based on procedures to crack down on crime activities.” In response to the rising crimes over the past weeks across the coastal city of Sihanoukville, Chamroeun led a PAUC meeting on Tuesday and he ordered the forces to carry out operations to look out for and crack down on all crimes.

BEIJING, March 29 (Xinhua) -- China and Cambodia here on Friday launched the Year of Law Enforcement Cooperation between the two sides, pledging to strengthen cooperation in combating cross-border criminal activities.

Chinese State Councilor and Minister of Public Security Zhao Kezhi and visiting Cambodian Deputy Prime Minister and Interior Minister Sar Kheng attended the launch ceremony.

Zhao said that the decision of the two countries' leaders to designate this year as China-Cambodia law enforcement cooperation year opens a new chapter for bilateral law enforcement cooperation.

This year the two sides will regularly carry out joint law enforcement operations against crimes such as illegal online gambling, telecom fraud, drug crimes, crimes committed by mafia-like gangs and violent crimes, he said. Moreover, they will also adopt customs facilitation measures and make efforts to better protect the security and interests of the enterprises and citizens located in each other's country.

^^^ The reports of heavy-handed activity by the very rich against the powerless and even the well-to-do, of Chinese criminal activity all over Cambodia, of arrests of anyone resembling political opponents, of the bilateral policing agreement (Cambodia-China) and of the harassment of journalists have been piling up weekly.

The table is being set for the new owners of Cambodia.

I find myself spending far less time keeping up with visa and living conditions in Cambodia. In fact, I have pretty much given up on ever living there again.
