It's simple...

 

You drive in D during the day.
Drive in N during the night.
If you want to race, put it in R.
Don’t forget P when passing or when your car is packed. 
Use the "2" if there are only two persons in the car.
Use the "L" if you're lonely.
And drive in S when you're SLEEPING!
