The Ministry of a Digital Economy and Society (MDES) has urged telecom provider TOT to speed up its work to relocate utility cables from poles to underground. The TOT has set an August 2021 deadline for existing projects in downtown Bangkok, helping the city realize its Smart Metro goal.

The Minister of a Digital Economy and Society, Puttipong Punnakanta has looked into the utility cable relocation project performed by TOT Public Company Limited at three locations, namely on Lang Suan road in Pathumwan district, in front of Soi Sala Daeng, and in front of Soi Convent in Bang Rak district.

On inspection, these areas were found to have hundreds of cables intertwined in disorder, posing concern over the difficulty faced in controling a fire, should an accident occur.

After this finding, the Minister of a Digital Economy and Society ordered TOT to finish relocating these cables from above ground poles to underground tunnels within a month; to rearrange above ground cables that could not be relocated, and to remove unused cables.

TOT’s Acting President Morakot Thienmontree, said today the company had surveyed and planned the cable relocation works to take place over a distance of 48.7 kilometers.

The company’s goal is to complete its current communications cable management works by August next year.
