During the excavation of a construction site, an MK 82 low-drag general-purpose bomb weighing 230 kilogrammes was found on Tuesday in northwest Phnom Penh. Cambodian Mine Action Centre (CMAC) director-general Heng Ratana said that its explosive ordnance disposal (EOD) experts were dispatched immediately to disarm and safely remove the bomb “found around six-metres-deep”.

The construction site was located in Sre Ampil village, Ponhea Poan commune, Prek Pnov district, a suburb of Phnom Penh. The MK 82 is an aerial unguided bomb and part of the US Mark 80 series. Its length is 2.22 metres and it is 273mm in diameter.

From November to December 22, at least 6 US Mark 80 series bombs have been found in different provinces in Cambodia, two in Kandal and one respectively in Kampong Cham, Battambang, Kampong Thom and Phnom Penh. Ratana said as of November, CMAC experts responded to almost 6,000 emergency requests with almost 10,000 pieces of landmines and remnants of war were safely cleared.
