What's the problem?  Every religion is about money and commercialism, including Buddhism - and especially in Thailand.

People get themselves commercially inked with tattoos taken from "indigenous" cultures all over the world. Whether you think this is appropriation or something else, it's not going to change this.  People get tattoos for many reasons, some of which will just be to look cool or show off... although they will probably not admit as much. The way I see it, there is not much point in worrying about something you will not change, it will just do you more harm than good.
