internationalism Posted January 29, 2021 Share Posted January 29, 2021 (edited) some 4 hospitals in bangkok were planning to get 50-60k each of the american vax and offer for 6-10k. Later on some hospital declared importing sinovac 1mln for 3200b, with an option for another 9 mln doses. But non vax is registered in thailand yet (with exception of 150k astrazeneca from italy). The very first attempt by a private hospital to bring 10k astrazeneca, registration (and 500% mark up) was shut down by the government and hospital had to apologise. At this stage nobody knows what and when will be coming. The government is downplaying the pandemic, doesn't care about vax. Another junta blunder. There is not point rushing to vax, unless somebody is in a risk group. But I'm sure the price will be dear. the private hospitals which order vaccines from other companies still can’t import them, because the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) has not yet registered them and it is considered a risk to preventing the spread of COVID-19. I wish I could translate what the following excerpt from the above news report actually means: "For AstraZeneca’s COVID-19 vaccine, the FDA received registration application documentation on December 22, 2020, and sent it to experts to assess and approve the vaccine registration on January 20, 2021. The consideration took about one month. The vaccine, registered by the FDA, has been approved for emergency use. It is necessary to have a system for continual supervision and monitoring. Currently, two companies, namely AstraZeneca (Thailand) Co., Ltd. and Sinovac Biotech Co., Ltd., have submitted applications for registration of their COVID-19 vaccines through the Government Pharmaceutical Organization (GPO). The FDA is waiting for additional documents. It confirms that it is not preventing any company from applying for registration of their vaccine and is ready to provide advice and answer questions to facilitate the registration." The above excerpt would seem to be saying that at least for now, the Pfizer and Moderna vaccines, not to mention the one coming soon from J&J, are nowhere on the Thai horizon. The first paragraph of your excerpt refers to the vaccine to be imported from AZ and the second para refers to the proposal to manufacture the AZ vaccine in Thailand. It would be fairly obvious that Thailand would have little interest in vaccines that require storage at ultra low temperatures. It should be borne in mind that these vaccines also require additional regulatory approval on distribution, there are restrictions on how the vaccine can be transported and the batches split up.
