February 15, 20215 yr The Unexploded Ordnance (UXO) clearance operation of the sunken warship in the Mekong River, Kampong Cham province, has uncovered the bones of a former marine officer, as well as a total of more than eight tonnes of UXOs. Chairman of the Underwater Explosive Ordnance Disposal Committee in the Ministry of Defence General Sem Sovanny said yesterday that the team found the remains of the former marine officer named Chhim Chheangly. He was identified by his name badge. On Friday, Interior Minister Sar Kheng, while visitng the operation team, called on the relatives of Chheangly to contact the authorities to take the body for a funeral. He also praised the team for their hard work and good results, saying they must always prioritise safety. Gen Sovanny said that a total of 55,697 bullets have been uncovered, including 722 60-105mm bullets and 54,925 small arms (handguns and machine guns). He added that the search and collection operation over a 150-hectare-area began in October last year and is scheduled to be completed in May before the next rainy season. “The operation is expected to close in May. But we are not going to rush it. The main issue is safety,” he said.
