monthly morphine injections

Featured Replies

i saw on another thread someone was offered monthly morphine injections

for lower back pain.

how much would it cost and how often is injections per month ?

I have never heard of morphine being given on a monthly schedule, makes absolutely no sense. Also makes no sense to give an injection when the person is able to take orally.

More likely these were steroid injections. Which if effective may last many months. Sometimes, depending on the cause of the problem, a single injection leads to permanent relirf.

You would need a thorough evaluation first (probably including an MRI) to see if the problem is such that steroid injection is likely to be helpful.

As injection needs to be given in the exact correct location and within either the epidural space or the spinal canal the spinal space (but obviously without touching the cord) it should be done by a specially trained person, usually an anesthesthiologist, under ultrasound guidance.  (Injection can be either epidural or intrathecal)

My sister had it done at a top tier private hospital in Bangkok, whole thing including  the doctor consult but nto including the MRI, was around 30k. Would be much less at a government hospital but take many, many visits to arrange. Somewhat less at a less expensive private hospital.

In really severe, intractable pain (especially due to metastatic cancer) opiods are sometimes injected into the spinal space but this entails continuous infusion, not monthly doses. in the West there are programmable portable pumps that can be used to allow the patient to remain at home but in Thailand this would require long term hospitalization.
