Looking for a good clinic/doctor in Pattaya who specialises in mental health issues. I need to be able to tell them exactly what's wrong so they will need to be good with English. Also I'm on a tight budget so they also need to be reasonable in terms of fees.

Do you need a psychiatrist (i.e. able to prescribe meds?) or a pyschologist/counsellor?

Only psychiatrist can prescribe meds. But will spend very little time with you.

Some people need both,

What do you consider to be a "reasonable fee" ?  And how much trouble do you want to go to to spend a little less?

Government hospitals in Chonburi town and Sri Racha are the least expensive choice but require a Thai speaker to navigate and no guarantee the  psychiatrist will speak much English, Also extremely long waits, lots of red tape and they are not going to pay any attention to what you say you need but rather treat according to their own protocols.  This may also be an issue at private hospitals but to a lesser extent.

The easiest source in Pattaya is Bangkok Pattaya hospital . They have  4 psychiatrists on staff  https://bangkokpattayahospital.com/en/find-a-doctor-appointment-en.html

If your issue is related to addiction/drug or alcohol dependency then this doctor there https://www.bangkokpattayahospital.com/en/doctor-profile?v_id=150&depid=19

Otherwise any of them

Consultation there will cost you about 2,000 baht.  Do not buy medication at the hospital unless it is a control drug not sold over the counter.  Most antidepressents and some antipsychotics are OTC in Thailand. Benzos are strictly controlled. If you do need a controlled drug and thsu have to get at theh osputal that is where it will get costly as there are significant mark ups.

Otherwise if you don't mind travelling to Sri Racha then there is at least 1 psychiatrist at Phya Thai Sri Racha, contact the following westerner in their int relations office for suggestion and appointment:

I am not sure what your issues are, but Thai psychiatrists may not be as familiar w/Western neurosis...

I met a lovely young fellow who is a psychologist. When I mentioned the volumes of dysfunctional families in the west, I could see in his eyes that he had nothing personal to relate that to... I am sure he had a lovely family w/his wife and 2 kids, and both likely came from good country families too...

There are also hotlines here advertised on TVF which might be free, suicide prevention, though that might not be your issue they may know of other help lines for Westerners..

good luck - I hope you find what you need...

I've suffered with mental health issues since I was around 7 years old, so this can easily be associated with parental issues, but I'm wired up the way I'm wired up. I had cause to visit a local head shrinker a few years ago. She was a very talented GP, very warm and understanding, but all I got out of the meetings was some Sertraline and Alprazolam. I took the Sertraline for two and a half years, and made the decision to ween off it by myself, but I had the respect for her to consult with her about that first. I still take Alprazolam 2 or 3 times a week as a sleep initiator. . .

But the nub of it is that I don't think she really helped me at all, even though she wanted to, and what she did for me was infinitely superior to anything I experienced on the British NHS, other than make me realise I have to deal with my issues myself, and that I have the power to do that. I am also fortunate to have a loving wife and kids.

Good luck to you in any case, I hope you find what you need, friend.
