We are looking for recommendations for trees to grow along the boundary of our land and the passing road, a length of about 70 meters. At the moment we have a barbed wire fence that is covered by bougainvillea to a height of about 1 meter and we are looking for something to grow behind the hedge (i.e. around three or four meters in from the road) that will grow a height of 3 meters and block passing motorists from seeing into the land. There are a lot of options that require regular pruning but we were wondering if there was something that would do the job with little or no maintenance. Any suggestions gratefully received.

Seems like lime trees would work...and I'm sure there are other fruit trees that would be the right height...but, of course they wouldn't be instant. If you find some instant fix you might plant some fruit trees also to take over the screening function in the long haul.

Lime trees are good idea - thanks. We have considered a small variety of jack fruit tree so maybe a mix of the two.

Any other ideas out there?

Not being able to help, but maybe on the farming forum there are more people who can give advice.

Hi SamsipEt

If you want a thick, quick growing screen then try Bamboo. I have a small leaved variety that has grown 3-4 meters in as many years and so far does not appear to have spread too vigourously.

Alternatively why dont you encourage the existing bougainvillea to grow higher 3-4 meters should be possible, with the added benefit of colour plus those vicious thorns to keep out unwanted guests. :o
