It can take anything from 3-8 weeks and no, you retain your old passport while the renewal is being processed. This blog post goes through the process in detail: https://www.richardbarrow.com/2019/06/a-quick-guide-to-renewing-your-british-passport-in-bangkok/ https://www.gov.uk/government/publications/overseas-passport-supporting-documents-group-2 Edited June 23, 2021 by brewsterbudgen

Seems to have an Overseas option https://www.passport.service.gov.uk/filter/overseas?cookies=true Sadly not. Those of us renewing our passports from Thailand are stuck with an antiquated process which was definitely hi-tech 200 years ago prior to the introduction of the Penny Black mailing service in 1840, in that we are obliged to deliver our paper renewal application and supporting docs in person to an office located in Bangkok or Chiang Mai, and then return to the same office a few weeks later in order to collect our replacement passport in person once received from HMPO in the UK. It is, however, possible to engage the services of an agent to make these enforced route marches on our behalf if we are unwilling or physically unable to make them ourselves, but only at considerably extra cost (typically 5,000 THB). Such is "progress", HMPO-style! Edited June 27, 2021 by OJAS
