Phnom Penh Authority: Dismantling of ‘floating villages’ is 95% complete

The eviction of Phnom Penh’s ‘floating villages’ is now 95% complete, according to a statement issued today. Mean Chanyada, Deputy Governor of Phnom Penh, said that Phnom Penh had 6 districts with floating houses and irregular construction along the river, with 1,472 locations, divided into 4 types, including fish, irregular construction, fishing.

 

Of these, 1242 fishing boats were voluntarily dismantled by the inhabitants. He also noted that temporary locations had been found for the former inhabitants on the border between Ponhea Leu district and Prek Pnov district as well as adjacent to Leuk Dek district.

 

On June 12, 2021, the authorities used administrative measures to dismantle fish farms, floating houses, small houses and irregular structures on the river surface to open navigation roads so as not to affect the ecosystem. The reasons stated were fish feed and waste discharge, open defecation in the river, causing serious damage to water biodiversity, water quality, pollution and affect the beauty of Phnom Penh and affect health.
