An Indian rice producer found itself in hot water after labelling it’s products with Cambodia’s iconic Angkor Wat. Rice producer ‘Voyage India’ has now stopped using the name of Angkor Wat after protests from the Cambodia Embassy in India who told the company to to immediately stop using the name and image of Angkor Wat on its packaging, which is in violation of trademark law.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation, in February 2021, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and International Cooperation and the Ministry of Commerce of Cambodia jointly inspected rice products and found the Indian company using the name of Angkor Wat Thai Hom Mali Jasmine Rice as well as using images of Angkor Wat without permission from the Cambodian authorities.

The Foreign Ministry said that a careful investigation by the two ministries, in close cooperation with the Thai side, found that the owner of the rice producer was an Indian company, Voyage India, based in the Indian state of Maharashtra.
