The Supreme Court has dissolved three political parties for violating the Law on Political Parties after a complaint was made by the Ministry of Interior ahead of the upcoming elections. The Ministry accused the three parties of failing to report to the ministry regularly and being inactive for many years.

Cambodia is to hold the 5th mandate of the Commune Council Election, known as the “Commune Election”, which will be held on June 5, 2022, and the National Election in July 2023. The three parties are Khmer Democratic Party (KDP) headed by Hor Mengheang, Vongkut Khemarak Mohanokor Party (VKMP), with Phan Sina as party president, and the Social Democratic Party (SDP) led by Thorng Sovannara.

Ministry of Interior spokesman General Khieu Sopheak has said the ministry had filed complaints with the Supreme Court after the three parties had been silent and inactive for many years. The ministry’s complaint was made on May 26. According to a recent Supreme Court verdict, signed by its president Dith Monty, the KDP, which was created in 1998 had violated Article 31 of the Law on Political Parties by not submitting the 2017 annual activity report to the Ministry of Interior.
