Cambodia ranks top in women workforce

The UNDP in Cambodia published a statement yesterday on its Facebook page stating that the rate of women workers in the Kingdom is higher than others in the region. However, the wage gap between women and men remains a challenge. It said that investing in policies promoting the employment of women is a positive factor which could raise the number of women in workplace. If men could stay home to take care of the newborns, then women could go to work. The government could promote the change of the social mindset to increase the rate of women in workplace.

 

Sexual harassment and violation of women’s labour rights happen also at workplace. To prevent this, the government should strengthen legal mechanisms to prevent and protect women from sexual harassment and other violations, the report said.

 

“As Cambodian women are still concentrated in the lowest paying or lower status jobs, it is imperative for the minimum wage to be set at a decent standard in relation to both living costs and median wages,” wrote the UNDP.
