Cambodian officials lash out at two US congressmen over sanctions

The ruling Cambodian People’s Party (CPP) yesterday lambasted the United States House Foreign Affairs Committee over an attempt to impose sanctions on Cambodian officials alleged to have undermined democracy.

 

The reaction came yesterday as the US’ House Foreign Affairs Committee on Wednesday unanimously passed the Cambodia Democracy Act, bipartisan legislation introduced by Representatives Steve Chabot and Alan Lowenthal, Co-Chairs of the Congressional Caucus on Cambodia, to impose sanctions on Cambodian officials responsible for “uprooting democracy in the country”.

 

Justice Ministry spokesman Chin Malin slammed the move, saying it was unacceptable. “We know that this handful of politicians have always acted against the interests of the government leadership. What they have done in the past aimed to discredit or tarnish Cambodia’s image on the international stage,” he said.
