Manager reported that yesterday evening large crowds were on Bang Saen beach in Chonburi in contravention of Covid-19 rules.

 

They were out celebrating a Chinese holiday.

 

The media reported no social distancing and little mask wearing and went with a headline suggesting they had "seized" the beach and couldn't care less about Covid. 

 

This prompted locals to implore the local authority to do something to address their fears about clusters and an even worse outbreak in the eastern Thai province that has seen 1000 infections for weeks and many deaths.

 

Eventually the local authority sent out a vehicle with loud announcements to tell people the were breaking the law and get off the beach.

Where were the Police?  Surely they should have moved people on, or arrested them.  If this was Bangkok, they would have had water cannons and rubber bullets to contend with!

I see a bottle of water but no Leo. All is well.????

Frightened of upsetting the Chinese community ............!!!

Despite the wishes of a certain demographic, the rest of the population ain't going to take it any more.

Locking everyone up only works for a short period, then it's all over folks.

Protests all over, even in Australia.

You don't have to be a genius to work it out it is a Chinese celebration and no-one said all were Chinese to my knowledge

It looks so crowded in that photograph it is a wonder nobody was crushed to death.

Lucky no foreigners were spotted or the police would have got involved.

I take it the attached photo was taken after the crowds had dispersed?

This was the issue over the weekend.

 

There has been increased activity around these parts since about Thursday / Friday when the fancy cars with Bangkok plates started to arrive.

There is no national Chinese holiday in August. There is the Hungry Ghost festival in Aug for devotees in Phuket. Those large crowds don;t seem behaving like devotees; more like shooting the breeze. Misleading piece of news.

Also known as "The Hungry Ghost Festival" to honor the dead.

It was celebrated here in Cambodia. In fact, MAKRO in Siem Reap had a special section selling fruit and pastries as offerings for the Hungry Ghosts.(stock photo)

Nope, they've been very busy celebrating the Chinese holiday. Only a sub section of the population do this but they were visible and the Thais know about it.

Yes, the OP did mention that it was a Chinese holiday, but that doesn't mean Thais are not up for a party. They need something to take their mind off the restrictions.

It's not only that. It's all the lies, mismanagement, false predictions, shattered hopes, and no end in sight.

Bang Saen is a Thai resort.  As such it has an even more invisible police force than Pattaya.  I spent a couple of weekends there before I gave up; the noise at nights from motorbikes went on until 3am.
