Went to P.O. today to post parcel to my daughter in UK, had the parcel

nicely packed, just under 2 Kg, so would pay the 2 Kg price, the lady at,

the desk says we now have to open parcels to check what's in them,

 

So took it over to another desk, opened it, cannot send these. Some

packets of dried fruit, Cashew nuts, no label saying what they are ,

made no difference that the packets were clear and you could see

what they were. so now ended up with a parcel just over a Kilo, which

ment I still had to pay 2 kilo price, 1,490 Thb , 

 

But another reason I was sending the parcel was I had poked open

the corrugation of the bottom of the box and rolled up 12  50 quid notes

and inserted them in ,these are the old 50's , with writing on,so cannot

change here,  and no idea when my daughter will be able to get here,

so she could take back, so had to take a chance ,before they go out

of circulation next year .fingers crossed.????

You should have maybe tried another post office first before opening.

 

BTW. I had  he same idea re 50's.

The bank notes will always be changeable  at a UK bank.. I would not risk sending them in the post.

It seems the few drug and contraband smugglers have made problems for the many innocents trying to send legit parcels and goods through the post.

 

A bit risky sending cash by post.

This indecent of opening parcels is highly irregular practice at a Thai post office, 99% of the times they don't care or ask, you should have gone to another post office, as for the timing and arrivals of posted items, most postal services around the world are working at a slow/half speed/capacity so don't hold your breath and always send using a tracking number...

I used to send cashew nuts on a regular basis and the woman at the post office used to help me to pack them. Your situation doesn't sound right at all.

 

Edit: Just noted that you stated that the packs had no label. It could be that made all of the difference. Mine were always branded.

The problem is I am never going back to UK, and my daughter

who is Vegan and animal rights ( which I respect very much),

will not get the vaccine, because it's tested on animals, so

that's why I had to do it, could not see any other way

Back in the 90's I had 7 or 8 pound coins that couldnt be exchanged. So I walked around Silom and exchanged them with Brit tourists.

 

Recently, my wife tried to send some longan from Chiang Mai to Bangkok for her daughter.

They opened the package at the post office to check the contents and then told my wife that currently in Thailand you cannot send fruit of any kind via mail.

Happy to report my 600 quid arrived safe and sound in the UK,

now mulling whether to have my daughter send me new 50's

back the same way. or just use Wise ...

worth to try many post offices. 

the only ban on fruits was sometimes end of july I think, around x birthday, when there was very long weekend, and the PO couldn't deliver on time.

still, there are couriers, albeit more expensive.

So the army can send a large cargo military plane to pick up 2 tonnes of longan from CM to Krabi, but citizens can't post fruits for a small fraction of 1mln airlift 

I have had letters / cards to the UK disappear that had 1,000 baht notes in them.
Better to do a UK bank transfer and send card separately.

 

I wonder if there is a scanner that recognizes the metal strip ?

Where I worked (central London news company) they did a survey on Xmas post, this was a few years back. They posted 20 cards in London, each with a 20 pound note inside.

NONE of them were delivered, the opinion was the PO sorting machine could detect the metal strip in the money.

I guess there best thing to do is do all the packing in the PO, in front of their eyes (not the £50's though).

Just read the title and checked if you brought a gun to the post office. ????
