Cambodia takes over Asean chairmanship from Brunei

Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah of Brunei yesterday handed over the bloc’s chairmanship gavel to Prime Minister Hun Sen at the closing ceremony of the 38th and 39th ASEAN Summits held via videoconference. In an online speech after holding aloft the symbolic gavel, Mr Hun Sen congratulated Brunei for its successful ASEAN chairmanship this year.

“On behalf of the people and the government of Cambodia, I am indeed proud that Cambodia is taking on the ASEAN Chairmanship for 2022. Taking this opportunity, I would like to express my great appreciation to Brunei for leading ASEAN in 2021 under the theme “We Care, We Prepare, We Prosper”.

Particularly, I wish to commend Your Majesty the Sultan Haji Hassanal Bolkiah for the wise and effective leadership as well as achieving many fruitful outcomes, including the Summits that have just been concluded”, he said.
