Could somebody explain to me why if a farang is married to a thai they have to show a 40k monthly income but if a farang wants to stay on an extension/retirement they have to have 65k monthly come to that if you dont have these funds a farang married to a thai needs 400k savings as opposed to a farang having to have 800k also 12x65=780 where does the 800k come from non of it makes sense somebody please explain.

It is the law. What does not make sense? The fact the married person with a valid reason to stay in Thailand (family) has to show less money than the world traveler who decides this is where he want to hang his hat?

Believe you will find the same logic with most countries. For the US there will be low minimum level income requirement for a foreign spouse to enter but it would likely cost millions for someone without family (if they could enter at all).

As for the 65k/800k not computing they have rounded off the 800k to an easy figure (as this most likely has to be calculated from a changing exchange rate anyhow).

Thailand has determined that two can live cheaper than one. It doesn't sound right but I can assure you that it is correct. :o (At least for me).

JR Texas: I think Thailand determined that it was too easy for a Thai-Farang family to live legally by putting 200K int he bank. So they changed it to 400K. Then they determined that was also too easy.......so they made the requirement much more difficult and did away with the 400K and introduced the 40K per month income. It is simply designed to push farangs out........that is, of course, my view.

have to agree with you there after all 12x40 =480 meaning an extra 80k a year to find a thai teacher friend who works full time tells me her monthly income is only 30k

I think the reason they are lifting the financial bar (200-800k) is they want to attract "Good Quality" farangs that will have the money to throw away in this dear country.

I like to think that I could be one of those good quality farangs but get a little p----d cos they make it so difficult for us all more so for me and my partner as although we have co-habited for over 15 years everything required to live in this piece of paradise is double please dont suggest getting married we have both been there and worn the the t shirt
