My GF was talking to me about her friend who is back in Thailand after parting with her husband in the UK. I don't know the full story other than the relationship broke down and that she only had a few months on her visa. However her husband has refused to let her stay in the UK despite them having a child. He has not been in contact with her for nearly 2 years even just to ask about his son, he has made no contribution financially to their child either. He has also made it clear he will make it has difficult as possible for her should she want a divorce.

Surely if this guy won't divorce her she should be granted some sort of child maintanance. The difficulty is she was married in Thailand and the child was born here too. She doesn't have the finances to pay for a solicitor. Is there anything she can do.

Obviously i have only heard the story from my GF but regardless of what she may or may not have done, this is no excuse to abandon them.

Any suggestions on where she could get help.

Has she tried the British embassy? Presumably her child has British citizenship, I don't see why can't they help a British citizen in need. Or at least, offer some advice.

Was the marriage registered at th Embassy - I would think so if she went to the UK or was she on a Visitors Visa?

Was the child registered in his name?

There are womens groups in the UK with friendly solicitors who will help her get what is due even if its only child maintenance

if they were legally married in Thailand, then they are legally married in uk.If he is the registered father he is obliged to give financial support for his child.
