Despite the discovery of Cambodia’s first case of the Omicron variant yesterday and the best efforts of the Government and Phnom Penh City Hall to push the 3rd ‘booster’ dose against Covid-19, anecdotal evidence shows that the population of Phnom Penh seem slow to avail themselves of the 3rd dose – as a visit to a totally empty vaccination centre in Phnom Penh yesterday showed.

On our visit yesterday afternoon to a large vaccination centre by the Olympic Stadium, Khmer Times was surprised to find the vaccination centre totally empty – with the 2 staff members on duty saying that the turnover of people coming to be vaccinated had been ‘slow’. This was despite the centre being set up to process around 100-150 people at a time – as shown by row upon row of empty red plastic chairs.

During our 30 minutes in the centre, not a single person entered the centre to be vaccinated – a marked contrast to the queues of people seen in the campaign for the 1st and 2nd doses Low uptake of the 3rd booster dose in Phnom Penh led Phnom Penh authorities to extend the 3rd ‘booster’ shot campaign indefinitely on the 12th of November.
