PATTAYA (NNT) - Businesses are responding favorably to the government’s decision allowing this year’s countdown celebrations to take place. The beachside city of Pattaya this year is planning its official 3-day countdown event, under stringent disease control measures to prevent infections.

Pattaya City in Chonburi is now planning to hold its official countdown event at Balihai Bay, featuring performances from well-known musical artists.

The 3-day event will be taking place on 29-31 December, simultaneously with another countdown event on the island of Ko Lan off Pattaya coast.

Mayor of Pattaya Sontaya Kunplome said these events will be held under stringent disease control measures while calling for entertainment venues to strictly comply with health protocols to prevent COVID-19 infections.

The Center for COVID-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) has previously announced entertainment venues can organize countdown celebrations, allowing alcohol serving until 1 a.m. on the morning of New Year’s Day.

Mr. Wasan Sanguantoikam, a cafe owner in Pattaya, said the CCSA’s allowance enables businesses to gain more revenue, after being long affected by the pandemic control measures.

He said the venues are willing to comply with all mandated social distancing measures, including the SHA certification and the Covid-free setting guideline.

Outside of Pattaya, Si Racha City Municipality is also planning for its own New Year celebrations on Ko Loy from 30 December to 2 January, with the New Year’s Eve fireworks being the main attraction.

The municipality says they are hoping for the local economy to gain more momentum from tourism activities, with all the events held strictly complying with the COVID-19 prevention measures.

And when asked about New Year's hugs, kisses, handshaking, and forming circles to sing Auld Lang Syne, the answer was "Nein, das ist sehr verboten!"

Steiner will apparently be in charge of bunker security on the night.
