I am trying to access things like torrents and yootoobe with next to no success.

Is there a way to tell what is and isn't blocked so I don't waste my time trying to figure out if its me or something else.

I really do appreciate having these sites blocked, I realise it is for my own good and I am far too stupid to be able to decide for myself what I should and shouldn't be doing.

you should check with ICT (Ministry for Information and Communication Technology) here in Thailand! Many sites blocked incl. the sites you wrote about!
