Thai Foreign Minister Attends ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat

BANGKOK (NNT) - The Minister of Foreign Affairs participated in an online conference of the ASEAN Foreign Ministers’ Retreat (AMM Retreat) to strengthen cooperation among ASEAN member countries.

 

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Foreign Affairs Don Pramudwinai exchanged views with foreign ministers from other countries via video conferencing on Thursday. The AMM Retreat was the first foreign Ministers’ Meeting under Cambodia’s ASEAN Chairmanship in 2022. During the meeting, Cambodia provided a full briefing on its priorities under the topic "ASEAN A.C.T.: Solving Issues Together," emphasizing the spirit of ASEAN unity and enhancing cooperation in addressing future challenges facing the region and its people.

 

The ASEAN Foreign Ministers reaffirmed their support for Cambodia’s Chairmanship and their commitment to implementing the outcomes of the 38th and 39th Summits in October. These commitments include the COVID-19 responses, economic recovery, ASEAN community-building efforts through the development of the ASEAN Community’s Post-2025 Vision, and promoting ASEAN’s external relations.

 

During the meeting, the Thai Foreign Minister urged ASEAN to be more proactive in calling ASEAN Dialogue Partners to refrain from escalating global tensions. This could be accomplished by fostering trust and constructive engagement in the region’s long-term peace, stability, and prosperity. He also called for the bloc’s solidarity to be strengthened in order to sustain ASEAN’s unity, coherence, relevance, and leadership in the face of strategic and security challenges.

 

The Deputy Minister also updated the meeting about Thailand’s actions as the ASEAN Coordinator for Sustainable Development Cooperation. He encouraged member countries to accelerate the implementation of the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) through cooperation in the Bio-Circular-Green (BCG) Economy model. He also shared his views on how to promote ASEAN’s constructive role in the peaceful resolution of the situation in Myanmar.
