Hi,

I'm going to be in Samui for a few weeks but need to do a visa run and was wondering how easy is it? Where do you go and are there tavel offices arranging this?

If so roughly how much do they cost from down there? I'd say Burma was the best, but wanted to know if you could do these in 1 day or is it a stop over.

thanks for any replys

most travel agents can arrange these trips, about 1,500 baht, all done in a day.

Go with Herbert if you want to get back at a decent hour, as lite beer said, it is a bit of a white knuckle job.

Herbert: 0818933859

Went to Malaysia with him a couple of years back, and I think we were back

in samui around 6ish....early start though!

I would use him if I had to go again

Herbert is a fair deal but make sure he goes on the date that you need to go. There are three or four visa run companys on Samui and they go different borders on different days of the week. Can get information from Pen 077 430 078 she can tell you what days who goes where

here is one i am going to try next time. Firefly one way to Penang-Air Asia Penang to Bangkok- Bangkok Airways last flight to samui all for less than 4000 baht. times work out ok as well. i know its a drag but no overnight and no early morning start. i know its a couple of grand more expensive than the bus but a lot safer and way more comfortable

my friends flow to penang. got back yesterday. the trip was ok. but in my friends passport. the officer wrote.

" this user has applied for many tourist visa's back to back. maybe a denial in the future"

how made is that. not only stopping border bounces but controlling the people that go to the embassy.

does this country want our money.

confusing

This was designed to stop the people that were working and just doing a month to month border run. With out the right visa and not paying the taxs. Get legal or stay out is the message.

My point exactly. Tourists are torists - regardless of intended duration of stay.

Why your precise targeting of 'low income' tourists? 'Cheap Charlies' have the monoploy on back to back tourist visa's? Is that your point? Apply for more than three tourist visa's and you are included in a demographic which is (quote) 'overiding the immigration laws'?

I have back to back tourist visa's. Are you suggesting I am a low income tourist?

There must be laws and regulations to back such a suspicion. In Germany for example the officer would make an interview before giving a statement or even writing a comment in a passport.

if you are a tourist and you come to thailand for a 30 day visa and then extend it because you love traveling in thailand then you are a tourist.

if you are in thailand for more then 3 consecutive tourist visas (90 days) then you are under the law required to go back to your own country and apply for a proper visa as you are not realy a tourist but more of a permenant resident. you need to declare and explain to the consulate why you are taking long resident in thailand and how you will be able to support yourself. thai law requires that you have funds to support yourself.

this is not realy different from many other countries.

however there are those... as you defined as cheap charlies :D who dont wish to pay the right dues or follow the law.

have a look at the visa section and see how many tricks farrangs come up with to override the law instead of applying for a proper visa. :D

I belive that most of those doing it are the ones that can not afford to do it the right way. why would someone go to all this trouble of a visa runs if they can afford a proper visa??

there are those who wish to stay in thailand but dont have the funds to support this. so they override the laws by doing continous visa runs. they are "low income" as if they had enough funds they would have been able to get a long term visa with out the need to do the visa runs.

Ok, can you tell me how I can stay in Thailand for a longer time of period then 90 days and what visa do I have to apply for if not going for multiple tourist visas. You seem to know very much and think only low income are doing this kind of tourist visa things so here is me who probebly earn more then vast majority of people on this forum.

Here it is, Im proffesional poker player and I am averaging five figures in $ a month (Im not going in details here obviously). Now tell me what kind of visa do i need to apply for and what am I going to say when they ask me what occupation i have and how I would support my self here to obtain some other visa?

Granted - but this law is fleible in the eyes of the system. In short; this is not essentialy enforced. If it is not enforced, and certain people consider it more convenient to apply for a TV, follow it up with 3 x 30 days stamps - and then apply for another TV multiple times, then that is up to to them.

For example - the new 'law' that requires border bouncers in Cambodia to provide an air ticket out of the country has always been there from year dot. It was only enforced recently.

You should know by now that Thai law has always been flexible on all levels. The law is the law - but if not enforced, it is a moot point and does not make any persons taking advantage of this flexability a 'low income tourist'.

lets use an analogy - riding your bike on Samui with no crash helmet is illegal. The law states, everyone must waer a crash helmet. Most people dont. Would this make them (quote) 'overiding the law'? I dont think so.

I will hold my hands up here and admit that my following opinion may be unfair... But i have always had the feeling that ferangs in Thailand on long term visas often, but not always, kind of class themselves as 'elite'. Your permancy in this country is exactly the same as a humble 30 day border bouncer - regardless of the visa you have.

For some people - it is more convenient to apply for multiple TV's than it is to fly home and apply for a 12 month visa. A 5 year visa - if one existed - i would agree with you. But flying home and going through the hassle of aquiring a 12 month visa for many, is a hassle best left avoided whn you can simply take advantage of the flexability of the the laws.

In the same way you would, riding a bike with no helmet.
