pepper spray,mace,etc.,are legal though some states have restrictions.as one who's camped and climbed most of my life,i've had several magnum-sized pepper sprays designed for bears.called bearguard,it looks like a mini fire extinguisher and can spray a huge cone-shaped blast up to 25 feet away.fortunately i never had bears or wild dogs to contend with,just lots of snakes and deliverance-looking inbreds.my italian-made stainless steel 9mm berettas in my fanny packs gave me more comfort than any spray.
