Goodbye Little Cat.

Lost my Little Cat today.

 

She came into our lives about 10 years ago - a tiny tabby kitten who didn't seem old enough to be out alone. She wandered into our kitchen one evening and - despite some very stiff opposition form our existing 5 cats (mother and 4 yearlings) - she decided we were her family and stayed. 

 

Because she was so small and we had no real intention of keeping her, we just called her 'Little Cat' but she started to answer to that name so it stuck. 

 

Unlike the other cats, she had a full and proper tail which I loved. She was spayed at about a year old.

 

She was the sort of cat you could do anything with - throw her, hold her upside down, tickle her belly. So good-natured,.

 

About 5 years ago she developed FIV and has lived with it without any apparent problems, apart from her teeth, since then. 

 

Last week she went rapidly downhill. Lost about 25% body weight, wouldn't eat or drink, was constantly wet, listless and always crying. 

 

The vet at Khon Kaen University Animal Hospital diagnosed chronic kidney failure, anaemia, dehydration probably due to her FIV. They said they could keep her in hospital for aggressive treatment which might achieve nothing lasting or we could take her home. Since she couldn't/wouldn't eat, that would have meant slow starvation, not something I was prepared to inflict on her.

 

Much to my surprise, he also offered to euthanase her. I say 'surprise' because I've always understood that most vets wouldn't consider it. I decided that was the most caring option for her.

 

She died as I was hugging and brushing her. I buried her this afternoon in our garden which was her world. 

 

I'm really going to miss her.

 

Of the other 5 cats; mum died. 3 males wandered off as they do. One spayed female is still with us but I don't think she ever forgave Little Cat for barging into our home.

 

Sorry to go on but I'm a bit emotional just now.

i know what its like to lose a loved one,have a good sob it does help.

Had a house rabbit, Ginger, for 9 years he would spend his days sleeping by my desk or attacking my feet when I opened the fridge as that was where the coriander was stored, never a day goes by when I don't miss him. Feel for you.
