Bangkok  – The Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) organised the ‘Mongolia Market Table-top Sales – Agent & Media Educational Trip’ for six Mongolian travel agents and media members to experience some of the wonderful tourism products and services in Phuket and Phang-nga from 22-28 March, 2022, with the aim of growing the Mongolian market into a new target group for tourism to Thailand.

 

As well as showcasing tourism products and new tourism activities in Phuket and Phang-nga, the one-week trip included a table-top sales session in Phuket on 24 March, allowing the opportunity for participants from Mongolia to meet with 18 Thai hotels and tour operators for product updates and business negotiations. Also present at the event session was H.E. Tumur Amarsanaa, Ambassador of Mongolia to Thailand.

 

Mr. Chuwit Sirivejkul, TAT Executive Director of the East Asia Region, said, “The trip was aimed to boost awareness in the Mongolian market of tourism products and new tourism activities in the ever-popular Southern Thailand destinations of Phuket and Phang-nga. This in turn will hopefully lead to an expansion of the existing seasonal air links between Mongolia and Thailand to year-round services and a growth in the Mongolian market.”

 

The number of Mongolian tourists visiting Thailand started to see a steady increase from 2016, with direct flights, both scheduled and charters, linking the Mongolian capital Ulaanbaatar with Bangkok and Phuket from October to March each year. Market data showed Mongolian tourists prefer beach destinations like Phuket, Pattaya, and Hua Hin, and their average length of stay in Thailand is seven days or more.

 

The ‘Mongolia Market Table-top Sales – Agent & Media Educational Trip’ was part of the larger ‘Amazing New Chapters Mega FAM Trip 2022’ from 21 March to 1 April, 2022, in which some 80-100 travel agents, media, and key opinion leaders (KOLs) from around Asia and the South Pacific are being introduced to new tourism products and services on offer in Chiang Mai, Phuket, and Phang-nga.

While the Mongolian travel agents and media members explored Phuket and Phang-nga, other invited participants from ASEAN – Cambodia, Lao PDR., Malaysia, Singapore, and Vietnam; East Asia – Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan; South Asia – Bangladesh, India, and Pakistan, and the South Pacific – Australia were similarly exploring Chiang Mai and nearby provinces from 26 March-2 April.

 

Both itineraries in Chiang Mai and Phuket aim to show Thailand’s readiness to welcome back tourists in the new normal.

Isn't Mongolia part of China, and has China not curtailed its travel abroad.  They can showcase all they want but I am sure travel to Thailand from those locales is a dead subject for now....

Not since 1911, when (Outer) Mongolia declared independence from China. (But yes, there's also Inner Mongolia, which is part of China.)

 

Fun facts about Mongolia: population of 3.3 million, average monthly salary in Ulaanbaatar (the capital): 1.2 million Tughrik (about 400US$), a flight from Ulaanbaatar to Bangkok costs more than a flight from London to the same destination, so, yes, another fringe market segment for Thailand's tourism industry. (I'm sure, the 87 Mongolians who can afford a holiday in Thailand are already packing...)

Have to sell a lot of sheep, goats, camels, yaks to afford the flight and taxi fares.

I think that slogan sums up thailand current tourism - Table Top Sale - uk definition , jumble sale or flea market.

Doubt there will be 4 bookings for each agent this year.

Dozens of people!

They expect, well TAT has predicted, over 5.6 million visitors this year, one has to wonder what they are dreaming and why they are wasting money on showcases like this when the money spent is more then they will ever see in return from visitors from those countries.

 

I have been noticing new ads for very newly built resorts in Phang-Nga hitting my in-box for some of the travel sites I review.

Instead of the Thai-Denmark shops it will be Thai-Mongolian Yaks Milk Shops......Oh how I wish there was a true Mongolian Barbeque restaurant in Bangkok where you gathered up what you wanted in a large bowl added your sauces of choice and then they cooked it like this.....

Ooooh, the putrid smell of desperation is getting stronger!

 

So... they really want to tap "the Mongolian market" now? For their grandiose high-end tourism folly? A country with just 3.3 million inhabitants, the vast, vast majority of whom can barely make ends meet as is? Where the average monthly household income is less than half of Thailand's? Where over 70% of the urban population live in run-down, Soviet-era apartment blocks? Where affording an airplane ticket to Bangkok means saving up every penny for half a year? 

 

Which "target market" do you have in mind next, TAT? Equatorial Guinea? Eritrea? Burundi? Nauru? Kyrgyzstan? 

 

It's high time for you to start getting a grasp, TAT!
