BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Highways (DOH) has reminded unregistered motorists who have yet to pay the toll fee for using the M-Flow gateway to do so by the end of this month.

DOH Director-General Sarawut Songwilai said the grace period for unregistered motorists to make late payments for using the M-Flow gateway will end on March 31, and urged those who have not done so to pay within the specified time frame. The department previously suspended the M-Flow fine system and returned the fines collected from motorists to alleviate public confusion. Authorities will reinstate the imposition of fines on April 1, 2022.

M-Flow is an autonomous free-flow system that makes use of artificial intelligence (AI) technologies, such as video-toll cameras. AI can accurately match car license plates to their owners 99 percent of the time, allowing drivers to pass through toll gates without slowing down and at a maximum speed of 120 kph. Registered users can pay the fee with a credit card or through other services using an app. Meanwhile, bills will be mailed to unregistered users’ homes, requiring them to pay within seven days or face a hefty fine.

The Director-General urged motorists to sign up for the M-Flow system, stating that the department will provide two free passes to the first 100,000 people who sign up, as well as a 20% discount on fees for three months. Motorists can register quickly and easily through its Line account: OA@mFlowthai in a process that takes only two minutes.

For more information, motorists can dial 1586 or visit the website www.mFlowthai.com.

Knowing Thailand well enough, I don't think any of the fines send by post to the culprits will be payed.

I didn't think anyone who didn't register and have the credit/top up card and the windscreen remote device could use the M-flow lanes. Am I wrong?

Yes, you're wrong. You're probably thinking of Easy Pass, which requires users to have a transponder in the vehicle to communicate with the toll gate, and to slow to a crawl so that the payment can be verified and the barrier can go up.

M-Flow is a totally different system that uses license plate readers - so no transponder is needed - and allows vehicles to pass through the barrier-free gates without slowing or stopping. From what I can gather, anyone can use the lanes, but while registered users can have a card on file and be charged automatically, those who haven't signed up will get a bill in the mail that will need to be paid within a week in order to avoid a fine.
