Dramatic pictures on the Naew Na site showed a Ford Fiesta on fire on the Petchkasem road leading to Ratchaburi in central Thailand yesterday.

Thanawan, 53, said she had been taking her car to the garage for an oil change when it started behaving erratically.

She got over a rise before deciding to park by the Niran housing estate as smoke then flame engulfed her Fiesta.

Locals tried to put the fire out to no avail and when the authorities arrived they succeeded in quelling the conflagration in just 10 minutes.

Unusual for a Thai to want to change the oil. Makes me wonder if the actual story was that there was no oil, and she was driving the car to get some. Hence the engine burned up.....

Ford fiestas (and other Fords) did have a bit of a reputation in the UK for going up in smoke. happened to my ex-wife and to a colleague at work. Only cars i ever saw burnt out and not the result of an accident/vandalism.

There was a problem with their CVT transmission which ended up in a class action, in Thailand also.

That will buff out ????.

From the translation it sounds like maybe the accelerator stuck so the driver applied the handbrake. Car still in gear and trying to accelerate with the handbrake on? Sounds like a recipe for heat, friction and a fire. Maybe turning the engine off would have been prudent?
