Thai ace Kiradech Aphibarnrat in Mexico

 

One of the shots of the day on Thursday belonged to Thai ace Kiradech Aphibarnrat, who sank his career first PGA TOUR hole-in-one on the 189 yard par-3 fifth hole with a five iron en route to a 70.

 

 "I had 189 yards to the hole, with the wind coming in from the right. I talked to my caddie that I needed to hit a high 190, 195 shot, hit a solid shot right of the hole. I know the slope was right to left but I did not expect to get in the hole,” said Kiradech.

 

He is chasing a maiden PGA TOUR victory after coming in joint-third at the WGC-Mexico Championship three years ago.

 

"The way I started the first two holes, I was three over, I was just trying to bring something back. I was just looking to put it to three or five feet on that hole. This is my first hole in one in a tournament as a pro, although I’ve done it before during my junior days when I was in the national team. It’s good to get the ace and it felt like good luck to me all day."

 

There have been plenty of aces on the PGA Tour recently – and Kiradech Aphibarnrat is the latest man to achieve the feat.

 

The first Thai golfer to play on the circuit had his first hole in one on the fifth hole at the Mexican Open.

Using a five-iron, he stepped up and drained his tee shot from 189 yards.

Aphibarnrat had actually started poorly with a double bogey and a bogey in his first two holes and was three-over at the time of his ace.

 

His fortune continued and after two days he is T18 AT -6 with Jon Rahm leading at -12. Kiradech needs a good finish as his season has not started well.

 

Next week he is in the field at the Wells Fargo so hopefully this string of good scoring continues.

Yes, didn't he lose a lot of weight before?

Shot 74 on Sunday to finish T61.  I like Kiradech, but he needs to get himself into shape to compete with those PGA studs.   Being a fatty just doesn't cut it anymore in the modern game.
