BANGKOK (NNT) - The first visit by a Japanese prime minister to Thailand in nine years is expected to help cement long-term relations between the two nations, as well as create new trade and investment opportunities for both sides.

Officials also told reporters that Prime Minister Prayut Gen Chan-o-cha and Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida were expected to sign a number of new memoranda of understanding (MoUs) and agreements during their meeting on Monday (2 May).

Kishida’s visit coincided with the 135th anniversary of Thailand-Japan diplomatic relations. Additionally, it provided an opportunity for delegates from both nations to discuss future economic and investment cooperation, as well as other key issues in the region.

According to Government Spokesperson Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana, Kishida and Gen Prayut were also expected to discuss several areas of bilateral economic cooperation, including more investment opportunities in the EV-making industry.

Other topics included regional security cooperation as well as a variety of sub-regional and international issues.

Things started to go sour after the great floods a decade or so ago.

Rising costs, labour issues, politic stability are all factors.

Thailand and Japan signed a deal on the transfer of defence hardware and technology yesterday (Monday) and two other agreements, on financial cooperation and a Japanese grant for Thailand’s post-COVID healthcare.

The signing of the documents was witnessed by Thai Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha and his Japanese counterpart, Fumio Kishida, capping a two-day visit to Thailand by Fumio, the first Japanese prime minister to visit Thailand in nine years. The visit coincides with the 135th anniversary of the establishment of bilateral diplomatic relations.

In his statement, delivered at the end of the meeting, Thailand’s prime minister said the outcome of the meeting reflects the inclusive and comprehensive strategic partnership between Thailand and Japan.

He said that both sides agreed to enhance economic cooperation and acknowledged the drafting of a 5-year Joint Strategic Plan on Thailand-Japan Economic Partnership.

Complimentary "Happy Endings"

Last stop Thailand for Prime Minister Kishida.  Japan has big investments in Vietnam, and other SEA Countries.  You’re not the only one, Thailand—better behave and play it straight.

There is a big basic difference between to 2 PMs.

The Japanese PM was elected by a free popular and transparent election.

Ironically, flooding that came about because of the incessive expansion of industrial/business parks [largely underwritten by Japanese et al] upon the natural flood plains.
