BANGKOK (NNT) - The Department of Internal Trade (DIT) is working with retailers to provide consumers with 10-69% discounts on school uniforms and supplies.

DIT Director-General Wattanasak Sur-iam said the move is expected to help alleviate financial burden of parents as schools resume classes following two years of remote learning during the pandemic.

All seven branches of Suksapanpanit stores, which are under state supervision, will slash the price of uniforms by 50% and text books by 20-40%, while offering discounts for other school supplies.

Other participating retailers include Samothong Garment, Nomjitt Manufacturing, TOPSON 1994, Somjainuk Teves, Bangkok Atlantic, and The Nanyang Marketing.

Additionally, Lotus, Big C, Tang Hua Seng, OfficeMate, and stores under the Central Group will offer discounts on several school items, including chemical pens, notebooks, laptop tables, coloring pencils, highlighters, boy scout and Thai Red Cross youth uniforms and shoes.

If they are under state supervision, why not just give away for free...maybe organise a voucher system of some sort or other.

So the state will still make a profit but pass the cuts on to the manufacturers?

Why can’t the uniforms all be of standard design and colour and sold everywhere in supermarkets? Also why do they have to be embroidered with name etc? This just adds to cost and prevents them being used by others when the child grows out of them.

Another racket in Thailand.

Here's an idea. Cut down on the ridiculous amount of uniforms they need.  My daughter has a few sets of the shirt and skirt (the standard), sports set (tracksuit and house shirt), the scout uniform and finally the traditional thai dress one they wear on the 'special days'. Scattered through out the year they have concerts they do that need a certain theme dress additional to all these.

Still cheaper than following fashion, like in many other countries. If your kid is not wearing the right brand it will risk to be excluded and bullied.

Probably 95% are standard design, and they are sold in supermarkets

Nothing to do with oversupply and reduced demand of course
