Amazing Thailand: Wobbly posts in Nan - no corruption involved, says officials

Sanook Thai Caption: Stuffed posts

Sanook reported on what they called a drama in Nan in the north of Thailand.

Roadside marker posts made of rubber stuffed with bamboo on a three kilometer stretch of the Nan to Mae Jarin Road.

The highway authorities decided to help the rubber industry by replacing old concrete posts with new rubber ones.

Since 2021 they have put in 2,806 of them at a cost of 2,050 baht each.

The idea is that they would be safer if cars hit them in accidents. It was reckoned they would last for up to 4 years.

The bamboo is meant to give them stability.

However, there has been an unforseen problem because of farmers burning their fields and the flames spreading to the bollards and damaging them.

Some of them have been burned down or knocked over. Others needed a lick of paint.

Now highway deputy Niran Khlongngam and his teams were out making repairs.

He assured the Thai public that they were meant to be like this - there was no corruption involved "for sure".

A video published by the media showed how the posts were meant to wobble.

No corruption..... just poor design, inappropriate materials and the bunch of  idiots who approved the project. More taxpayers dollars wasted.

Thai road users don't normally fair well with concrete posts so making them in rubber and bamboo actually makes quite a bit of sense.

Two issues spring to mind here...

First that the posts were designed with the assumption that they would certainly be hit by Thai drivers.

The second is that the bamboo in the center of the post is not treated with borax so all of them will be eaten by white ants.

It seems a safer option, considering how many motorbike accidents Thailand has.

Rubber would make for less injuries.

I wonder how much the bamboo was costed at........

This is such a very very Thai story.

People new to Thailand will read this and think, 'how on earth is it even possible that something like this passes muster?'.....

This is just the normal level of feckless-fluckwittery that goes on daily,  definitely involving corruption at 2050 baht per post, decision makers profiting from approving moronic ideas but accepted by all as there is some ‘dressing’ that this is good for the rubber farmers, they are being helped.

As Del Boy would say

As does re-newable sand in Pattaya [if people want to talk about tax-payers money]

???????????? How wonderfully Thai. Spend money to make poles safer for when motorists drive into them. You really can't get more Thai than that, especially with corruption thrown into the mix. Made my day!

If the bamboo is encased in rubber how to the ants get to it?

...and you know that because you helped make them?
