Essencial Vaccination

Featured Replies

Hi there,

I am planing to stay in Bangkok at least for 9 months. Please advise on what are the necessary vaccinations I should receive before my travel? :o

Thanks,

Hepatitis A (if you haven't already had it)

Hepatitis B

Rabies (human diploid)

Start now as some of these need a series of injections.

These are good vaccines to have even if not coming to Thailand. Hep A can be contacted just about everywhere, and having the rabies vaccine prevents you from needing very painful and dangerous series of injections if you get bitten by a strange dog.

Have your basics done: MMR, DTP, Hep A and Hep B. You might want to think about Typhoid maybe. Rabies is pretty expensive and probably not needed. As a side note...just because you get the Rabies vaccination, does not mean you still do not need to go to the hospital to get additional vaccinations if you get bitten by a rabid animal. It's a precaution and buys you time (and less shots), but it will not substitute for the rabies vaccination you would get at a hospital if bitten.

When I got my rabies shots after the dog bit me, they were not very painful. Just average shoulder jabs. Total cost less than 2,000 baht, including first aid and a tetanus booster.

Question: for those of us not in Bangkok, is the Red Cross the cheapest, easiest, and most informed place to get inoculations? Does anybody know where the Red Cross shot clinic is in Chiang Mai?

I thought it's next/opposite the US Consulate.
