Prosecution: 'Overwhelming' evidence of guilt for Clinton campaign attorney

Michael Sussmann leaves a federal courthouse in Washington.

Prosecutors at the trial of Democratic attorney Michael Sussmann told a jury Friday that there is “overwhelming” evidence Sussmann lied to the FBI weeks before the 2016 election in order to obscure the role of the Clinton campaign in advancing allegations that then-candidate Donald Trump had a secret computer link to a Russian bank.

During closing arguments at Sussmann’s false-statement trial, special counsel John Durham’s team ridiculed the longtime cybersecurity lawyer’s claim that he was acting independently to help the FBI when he told the bureau’s top attorney of the alleged communications between a Trump server and one for Alfa Bank, the owners of which are close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

“The defendant knew that he had to hide his clients if there was any chance of getting his allegations into the FBI,” assistant special counsel Jonathan Algor said.

Sussmann’s defense insisted that the former federal prosecutor had not lied to the FBI, but that Durham’s theory was absurd given Sussmann’s extensive interactions with the FBI on behalf of the Clinton campaign and the Democratic National Committee in connections with hacking of their emails.

“Mr Sussmann has HFA [Hillary for America] and DNC tattooed on his forehead. He’s dealing with them all the time,” defense attorney Sean Berkowitz told jurors. “Everybody knew who he was.”

It does not feel good being falsely told for 6 years that this was a conspiracy theory.

An attorney lied...I'm shocked. I may have to go and have a lie down now.

Why isn't Clinton in the dock for this egregious trick?

right, just a bit of harmless fun by Hillary. Nobody got hurt, it's not as though this disinformation campaign led to the failed impeachment of a sitting President...oh wait a minute

I had expected a more apologetic tone on here after the story broke that the origin of the Russia collusion hoax was Trump's opponent in the 2016 election.

"The Russia-Trump collusion narrative of 2016 and beyond was a dirty trick for the ages, and now we know it came from the top—candidate Hillary Rodham Clinton. That was the testimony Friday by 2016 Clinton campaign manager Robby Mook in federal court, and while this news is hardly a surprise, it’s still bracing to find her fingerprints on the political weapon."

I imagine Trump will now be able to sue Hillary, now that testimony under oath by her underlings is a matter of public record. And Jake Sullivan ought to be looking for a new job. Having a zero credibility liar as National Security advisor is highly questionable.

"Inside the courtroom, prosecutors showed the jury Clinton's tweet about the Trump-Alfa article from Slate, and Mook read aloud portions of the campaign's news release about the story. The release was from Jake Sullivan, who is currently President Joe Biden's national security adviser.

"We can only assume that federal authorities will now explore this direct connection between Trump and Russia as part of their existing probe into Russia's meddling in our elections," Sullivan said in the release on October 31, 2016, one week before Election Day."

Nice try! The FBI was already investigating the Russian interference when they got this information.  Additionally, the Alfa server information was dismissed by the FBI at an early stage and was not included in the investigation (I.e. Mueller report).

BTW, the same witness also declared that "He also testified that neither he nor anyone else at the campaign directed Sussmann to take the information to the FBI and that the main focus was tipping off the media."

On top of it, you are completely incoherent as Trump was not impeached because of the Russian interference, but for abuse of Presidential power and trying to collude with a foreign leader (Zelinski, in case you did not remember).

Since the jury are Clinton donors, the judge elected by Obama or whoever, the outcome is already very , very  predicable.

Yes, because she'd so dam ugly.

Doesn't matter how much evidence. What matters is how much evidence the Judge will allow and how much the jury loved Sec. Clinton or learned to hate President Trump.

I thought you were joking, but sadly not. It's even worse than you said. How can this be a fair trial? Totally shocking.

TURLEY: "The problem for Durham is the jury and the judge. I mean, he is facing a jury that has three Clinton donors, an AOC donor, and a woman whose daughter is on the same sports team with Sussmann’s daughter. I mean, with the exception of randomly selecting people out of the DNC headquarters, you could not come up with a worse jury."

Maybe because criminal courts are for people charged with crimes? What crime did she commit?

Just to clear. Trump was impeached for pressuring a foreign leader to go after a potential opponent of his in the upcoming election. Keep in mind that for months before this meeting Trump was not responding to pleas from the Ukrainian govt to send the weapons that a law mandated be sent so that the Ukraininan govt could battle against Russian backed separatists.

The Senate acquitted Trump on both impeachment charges on February 5, 2020

The republicans desperately need a distraction rite now to shift the focus away from their cowardice in helping to deal with sensible gun control laws that’s what this is about.so what a lawyer lied

And how were the jurors selected? A trial in the Senate is not comparable to a criminal trial. In fact, it's not clear that what Trump did was criminal. Which, by the way, is not a defense against impeachment. It was certainly sleazy and self-serving.
