Several people killed in Copenhagen mall shooting, police say

People react outside Field's shopping center in Copenhagen, Denmark on July 3, 2022.

(CNN)A shooting at a mall in Copenhagen left several people dead, local police said Sunday.

One person has been arrested, Copenhagen Head of Police Soren Thomassen told reporters at a news conference. He described the suspect as a 22-year-old ethnic Dane.

Thomassen also said police could not rule out the possibility that multiple people were involved in the attack.

Danish police say several dead after Copenhagen mall shooting

COPENHAGEN, July 3 (Reuters) - Several people were killed in a shooting at a shopping centre in Copenhagen on Sunday, Danish police said, adding they had arrested a 22-year-old Danish man and could not rule out it was an "act of terrorism".

Copenhagen police said officers had been sent to Field's mall in the city after reports of a shooting, and had told people inside the centre to stay put and await assistance.

There was currently no indication that other shooters were present, police said.

I do wish they would redefine 'terrorism'

I am pretty sure that if I was being hunted in a mall by a man with a gun, no matter his religion or views, I would see myself the victim of terrorism ! Even if the guy was killing people as he was angry with his phone company !

IMO, anyone that goes nuts in a mall and shoots to kill and harm people....is a terrorist and has committed a terrorist act!

Seems like gun control wasn't successful. But allowing nutters to get guns doesn't work either.

"It looked like something, I'm sorry to say, like something you would see from a school shooting in the US, people coming out with their hands above their heads," Olsen said.

At least in the US there is a chance a good guy with a gun would be on hand to stop this nutter as soon as he started. My understanding is that in Denmark and other European countries good guys are not allowed to carry guns around. I hope the American left are paying attention here, pulling the 2nd ammendment will not stop shootings.

On the other hand, in Denmark people are not allowed to get their hands on weapons that can fire a lot faster and do a lot more damage than a hunting rifle can.

Hell no giving guns to more people. More guns, more turkey shoot and more deaths. Denmark is doing great with tough laws on gun ownership which is reason they have little gun violence incidents. Last shooting in Demark was in 2015 compare with 250 mass shootings in US just this year.

Good guys? Do you have a special licence in the US to certify you are a good guy?

Small point to consider: how many shootings by "bad guys" take place per year in Denmark, compared to the US? ... divide by the population of course.

Uvalde, Uvalde, Uvalde ... good guys indeed. How anyone can offer the US catastrophic, ongoing horror around gun attitudes, legislation, (the glaring and appalling lack of it), and cultural obsession as a model for others beggars sane rational belief.

I wonder what this violent fella's belief system is constituted of? My gut tells me it comprised of bogus replacement theory paranoia and fantasies (an interesting, but transparent construct to hide and justify ones racist beliefs), transposed and infused with lots of 'the others, them' ideologies e..g dirty refugee, migrants tainting and eroding our pure glorious culture, misogyny and a few other truly perverse psychological treats.

Three dead and three in serious condition, some more wounded, but numbers not given.

We - i.e. the Police, at the moment - don't know details, so please don't judge in advance. The arrested ethnic Dane will appear in court Monday, probably some level of statement follows for the authorities.

We’ve already had an example of ‘good guys with guns, bullet proof vests, helmets and ballistic shields’ cowering outside while a killer guns down children.

We’ve had enough of the ‘good guy with a gun’ myth.

I wonder why we have the info the baddie is an "ethnic Dane" so quickly? Photos of the guy too. Incredible. Usually we are given weasel words explaining it is not standard protocol to release a suspects name or image until found guilty blardee blaa...

Next time there is an atrocity in northern Europe and the culprits pics are not released immediately I will add 1+1 and get the answer, 2.

The latest Danish news update says, that the three killed is a 47 year old Russian man living in Denmark, and two Danish teens, a boy and a girl, aged 17.

There are four seriously wounded, but now only one in critical condition. Two Swedes, a 50 year old man and a 16 year old girl; and two Danes, a 40 year old woman and a 19 year old girl.

The total number of injured people is 30; 20 of the due to injures caused during the escape from the shopping mall.

According to the police press conference this morning (Danish time), the arrested ethnic Danish suspect has confirmed that he was inside the "Fields" shopping mall and done the shootings. He is known by the authorities for being psychological unstable, and he had posted on social media about death and killings shortly before the incident. The police presumes than the man acted alone. The weapon used was legal, but the man had no permission to own such a weapon.

A witness told a Danish Newspaper...
"He looks like someone who has enough time. Walks around quietly. And fires his weapon at random people in Field's [the shopping mall]. Unaffected by the chaos he creates."

This is what 36-year-old Sarah from Vanløse tells about the young, blonde man with whom she suddenly came face to face in the shopping center on Amager on Sunday afternoon. And who has since been arrested for shooting several people. Police have confirmed that several have been killed.

"He's not stressed. He walks, as if he is on a pleasant family trip. As one who has free choice. The center is packed with people", she says a few hours after the violent experience.

There is a link to a Danish news story with video the suspected had shared on Youtube, HERE.

Edit/addition:
One of the shot victims, the 16-year-old Swedish girl, currently in a Danish hospital, tells how she saw the perpetrator and that she is now at Rigshospitalet [Copenhagen] and waiting to have the bullet removed from her body...
‘When I came down the escalator, just before a corner, I felt heat and heard a bang. Then I realized I had been hit. I turned my head and then I saw the perpetrator for a few seconds. "

Yeah. That's true but who ended up killing the killer? It was a good guy with a "borrowed" gun.  He was an off duty border patrol agent. He had no body armor and borrowed a gun from a guy in a gas station.  He went in alone while Uvalde PD cowered outside.

Or you could actually learn what the definition means.

An education is a wonderful thing.

With all the shootings in the USA,  one would think that the gun laws would be changed a lot more than they finally have been, but no that 2nd amendment and the NRA power seem to keep the insanity going. Having a population of 350 million is not a help either. When less than a million are killed such as what happened from COVID, it does not affect the population amount that much. Throw in the  different attitudes of different states and it all becomes one big mess to try sort out.

I agree that there are a lot less shootings in Europe and usually a lot less people die in them as well. Look at the age of the 2 latest shooters in their 20s.   Either still living with Mom and Dad, or barely on their own. No real experience on their own, and they have to go out and kill other people. It is a real sad world we live in.

Its a sad world that is for sure, too many crazy people.
