The Thai cabinet has decided to extend the stay in Thailand of migrant workers from Myanmar, Cambodia, the Lao PDR and Vietnam until February 13th, 2025, to address labour shortages in the industrial and service sectors.

 

Government Spokesman Thanakorn Wangboonkongchana said yesterday (Tuesday) that this extension applies to both documented and undocumented migrant workers, but they are required to apply for an extension of stay.

 

He said that documented workers, whose work permits are due to expire on February 13th next year, are divided into two groups, estimated at about 1.69 million people.

Let's see how this plays out. My Housekeepers passport expires in November, same with her extension of stay and her WP book expires on Feb 13th like the OP says. The Myanmar embassy is being a pain to deal with and will not renew her passport until after it expires, which will make it hard to get her extension redone....

Not a Thai thing, as same worldwide.  Supply & demand, and as long as they are paying the countries minimum wage, so be it.

 

Exploitation, NO ... job is offered, take it or leave it.  I've worked my share of low paying jobs till finding something else, and happy they were available, at the time.

 

One reason I live here, anything labor related price wise, is inexpensive compared to labor cost in the mother land.  Lowers the COL substantially.

 

Any home / auto service calls are ฿500 a visit / hour, if that, vs ฿2000+ an hour, just to look at back in the USA.

Same the world over. Nothing new about exploitation unfortunately. We are all involved in it one way or another. IMO

So true, as you don't know who is providing the labor for the product or services you are using.

 

Even USA airlines, will subcontract out to company paying way below the 'airline's' pay scale.   Saw it at DL @ PHL, the ramp was subbed out @ $6 or 7 USD an hr, when the DL employee got $18ish an hour.

 

Some 'unionized' employees priced themselves out of a job; coal, steel, auto, airlines for example.
