The Thai government’s ambitious plan, announced about seven years ago, to transform some north-eastern provinces bordering the Lao PDR, into economic development zones has not been realised.

So far, not a single investor has shown keen interest in the projects in Nong Khai, Mukdahan, Nakhon Phanom or Bueng Kan provinces.

For the project in Nong Khai, for example, the Treasury Department has substantially cut the original rental fee for land, from 24,000 baht per 0.16 hectares to 2,100 baht, andstill no potential investors have shown interest.

This is unacceptable. They should return to the good ol' Thai ways, and double the rental fee to make good for the loss in income...

I heard there are a couple of crises in China now, so not much dosh to expect from there anytime soon...

Before you move a business there; there has to be business to do.

There is not enough business.

Yeah, it would be terrible to make investments for development outside Bangkok. Then the money can start spread over Thailand. We don´t want that.

My guess who's going to invest in a country with an unstable political system.

the reason for the shunning is in the headline: it's a Thai Government Plan...

Build a casino????

Who would be so stupid that them invest anything under this junta regime run buy Cha Cha.

There is a lot of investment up there, including Thai investment. The only problem is it's across the river in Vientiane.

I think it's the same as it has been for decades.  The big money goons in Bkk need cheap labor from the NE.  Where do you think the majority of the "entertainers" come from who operate in the bars and massage parlors of BKK, Pattaya etc etc etc?

The reasoning behind making the NE a business hub was because the Chinese high speed railway is coming through Laos and over to Nong Khai. The original thinking was move business up there ready for its arrival meaning it woud be usable straight away wthout having to wait years for the line to be built down to  Bangkok and on to Samatprakan . I remember reading about it and even know a couple of guys who work for UK companies that have manufacturers in Samatprakan saying at the time that they may be moving their manufactring bases up to Issaan ( as they know my wife is from there). Looks like the Chinese will be tightening their belts and this may put the high speed rail on the back burner - hense business not wanting to move and therefore investment being withdrawn. Actually makes sense for a change .
