American businessmen happy with quality of life in Thailand

BANGKOK: -- Americans doing business in Thailand are highly satisfied with the quality of life and low-cost labour, while they are moderately satisfied with the Kingdom's infrastructure, availability of raw materials and trained personnel, cost of office space and the free movement of goods within the region.

These were the conclusions of the 2007 Asean Business Outlook survey conducted by the American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham) in Thailand.

More than 1,600 AmCham members in six Asean nations were surveyed.

"AmCham Thailand looks forward to continuing to work closely with the Thai government on issues of concern to American investors, particularly on ensuring transparency and consultation with all stakeholders as decisions are made which affect US businesses in Thailand," said executive director Judy Benn.

"Thailand continues to be a good place for US businesses but it needs to ensure that its policies and economic direction remain competitive with its regional neighbours."

The US is the second-largest source of foreign direct investment in Thailand.

Factors cited in the survey which have contributed to stagnation of economic expansion in Thailand include worries about government stability (up more than 25 per cent since the 2006 survey), general concern about laws and regulations (up 16 per cent from the 2006 survey), corruption, local protectionism and burdensome tax structures.

The problem is that Americans have a very low standard by which to judge the rest of the world.

That must explain why America is the greatest, richest superpower the world has ever seen.

Greatest............. debatable

Richest................Maybe, but squandering the world's resources at a furious rate,

faster than any other nation!!!

Whilst trying to destroy the cultures of the world by dragging them down to its own

politically correct, artificial version of "equality". :o

Historically the world's biggest slave owner.....

Responsible for the virtual genocide of the American Indian.......

Need I say more??

No envy or jealousy there are all.

Just pure contempt.

There is a quote in the New Testament of the Bible Matthew 7:5

Thou hypocrite, first cast out the beam out of thine own eye; and then shalt thou see clearly to cast out the mote out of thy brother's eye.

Interesting but confusing post since by quoting scripture you are sounding exactly like G.W.Bush and the moral majority ! I am also wondering if God speaks directly to you as he does G.W. Think about it !!

Somchai,

Don't confuse admiration for what an empire has done with the current leadership. Leaders come and go. I wonder if you'll feel contempt when China is the new superpower? You'll find plenty of not too pretty things in their past too.

It says "lower" confidence, it doesn't say not satisfied. It's a different survey with different quesitons, probably. Hard to compare the two. Each article used different categories. In the first, they said they were satisfied with quality of life. They also said they were moderately satisfied with infrastructure, etc. This could account for the lower confidence in the other survey. In the survey you cited, it's talking about political stability and the legal environment.

Hey, no country is perfect. Don't judge the U.S. by slavery or what happened with the American Indians, that happened more than a century ago. You can't judge American individualstoday by what the forefathers of the nation did, it has nothing to do with our lives' now.

I'm sorry. I stand corrected. The US is not a Superpower, it is the world's first and only Hyperpower. I believe the French intellectuals first gave it this name, but anyway, you can read all about it on Wikipedia or google if you really like. Oh, and by the way, you can also bash America's parent, the British Empire, because they were the closest thing to that in history. Funny, but interesting how you see the US, UK, Australia and NZ as a sort of warm and fuzzy new world Alliance. China will be welcomed into this club. China will join it, and all you whiners or whingers will be left to cry in your beer. (Oh, and if you saw the recent elections in France you will also see an alliance forming) plus Europe in general.

A hyperpower is a state that is militarily, economically, and technologically dominant on the world stage. The term was first used to describe the United States in the 1990s. It has also been applied, in retrospect, to the British Empire.

Your post contained several glaring inaccuracies and offensive fabrications.

1. squandering the world's resources at a furious rate, faster than any other nation!!!

China holds the uncontested crown as the King of Resource Squander. It goes along with being the world's biggest polluter and CO2 producer.

2. Historically the world's biggest slave owner.....

Wrong. Africans were and still are the biggest slave owners. That title is being threatened by China. How do you think all the great cities of ancient times were built?? You think the Romans put out tenders for bids? Slavery was a component of european society long before the Dutch brought the first slaves to present day USA. The Americans were latecomers to the slave trade and had to rely on arab and african slave traders for their supply. Suggest you have a look at this, it provides an update on slavery today. Depressing news. http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/in_depth/world/...ery/default.stm

Being the "biggest" slave owner doesn't mean that every other culture and nation from the Incas to the Japanese to Native Americans to Egyptians that all had slavery is any less guilty.

3. Responsible for the virtual genocide of the American Indian.......

Wrong again. You can thank the Spanish for that. You ever hear of the Carribean? It used to be populated by aboriginals who were killed off by those civilized spaniards and replaced by african slaves. What do you think happened to the first inhabitants of Mexico, central and South America after the spanish and portuguese showed up? They weren't given passes to vacation in the Canary Islands and Ibiza.

The british did sort of repopulate the carribean with native american slaves when they captured several islands. However, they swtched to Africans and Indians (from India). Didn't you ever wonder how Indians and Africans ended up in the Carribean?

If you hate Americans, take a number and join the line down at the Rio Grande like everyone else. You can be one of those millions of american haters that floods in from all over the world to live and work in a nation they hate so much that they all want to go there.

FYI: I am not an american, and dislike many things about the USA. However, almost everything I dislike about the USA , including prejudice and ignorance, is easily found in every other country. At least in the USA I can get a copy of Playboy and read the articles.

Judging a nations historical performance by modern standards is just stupid. Slavery etc. were accepted practices around the world. Question is how do nations perform by the standards that are current at the time. Anything else is irrelevant.

Responsible for the virtual genocide of the American Indian.......

The great countries of Europe started offing Indians in 1494, while the Americans didn't get into the act until 1776!

Americans didn't really get into it until much later than that. In the 1700's it was more of a push than genocide. The Louisiana Purchase did not happen until May 1803. Up until then 2/3rds of the population lived within 50 miles of the Atlantic ocean.
