Delgado) Thailand Accuses Cambodia of Violating Ceasefire, Raises Alarm The Thai government has alerted the international community, asserting that Cambodia has flagrantly ignored a ceasefire agreement, initiating attacks on Thai territory just as it was about to come into force. The agreement, inked on Monday by the prime ministers in Kuala Lumpur, promised peace from midnight. Yet, Thailand alleges the Cambodian military shattered this promise with continuous strikes along the border. Thailand’s announcement, made Tuesday, stresses their adherence to the ceasefire while spotlighting Cambodia’s alleged violations. They’ve informed global players, especially China, Malaysia, and the United States—witnesses to the ceasefire talks—about Cambodia's "lack of sincerity." Despite these tensions, Thailand is pursuing dialogue to prevent further civilian and military losses. Thai spokesman Jirayu Houngsub confirmed the cabinet's directive to the military: stand firm on the border and protect national sovereignty, reported the Bangkok Post. The Royal Thai Armed Forces hit back at statements from Cambodia’s defence that claimed mutual compliance with the ceasefire. Thailand asserts it has evidence of Cambodian aggression post-deadline, accusing Cambodian Lt Gen Maly Socheata of peddling illusions and obstructing the truth. Rear Admiral Surasant Kongsiri emphasised the ongoing military operations along the tense border, where Thai troops have established their presence in 11 strategic locations. Clashes have already claimed 15 Thai civilian lives and injured 38 others. Over 188,000 Thais are displaced, taking refuge in safer zones. In contrast, Cambodian spokesman Pen Bona dismissed Thailand’s accusations as fabricated. Emphasising Cambodia's commitment to peace, he reiterated their adherence to the ceasefire established in Malaysia, effective from midnight. The tension between Thailand and Cambodia underscores the fragility of agreements in volatile regions, with accusations flying and both sides defending their integrity. The proposed walls would span contentious regions in Thailand's northeastern and eastern provinces, including Ubon Ratchathani, Sisaket, Surin, Buriram, Sakaeo, Chanthaburi, and Trat. These provinces have witnessed recent clashes over the past five days between Thai and Cambodian forces, primarily in Sisaket's Kantharalak district and Surin's Panom Dongrak district, near Cambodia's Preah Vihear and Oddar Meanchey. The recent skirmishes resulted in the tragic loss of 12 Thai soldiers, with some casualties occurring even after a ceasefire agreement was reached, reported Thai Newsroom. Additionally, approximately 138,000 Thai civilians have been displaced from affected areas and are yet to return home due to safety concerns, despite the ceasefire remaining fragile. People view the concrete wall proposal as a peaceful, long-term solution to enhance security and stability along the border. While it aims to prevent further escalation, the situation remains delicate, with the potential for renewed conflicts hovering over the region.
