Wiang Pa Pao police in Chiang Rai, northern Thailand were called to the Wiang Pa Pao Withayakhom School after fireworks went off by accident.

Eight people were hurt at a sports day called "Wiang Pa Pao Games 2022".

Fireworks were planned for the opening ceremonies.

Before they were needed they ignited and brought down a sign on students who were lined up for a ceremony.

Four males and four females were taken to the local hospital after first aid was given at the scene. One was a teacher, the others secondary pupils.

Police were gathering evidence and interviewing all parties in their investigation of what happened.

Though it appeared the fireworks had self-ignited for some reason.

Or alternatively, the kids were messing around with the fireworks unsupervised.

A bunch of students and fireworks, what could possibly go wrong?

Amazing! Spontaneous combustion? AI?

I reckon the student (or teacher) with the cigarette lighter in their pocket is the likely culprit. :coffee1:

The village school next door is on day three of one of these galas as I write.

The days start with parades and inspirational speeches. The school band runs through it's repertoire repeatedly, which consists of two tune; one is the "US Marine Corps Hymn" played as a slow march, the other one isn't! No fireworks yet, last evening they had a pretty wild disco.

The children seem to be enjoying it, and as a retired teacher it ill behoves me to complain about the noise - don't mind it anyway!
